Prishtina, December 13- The National Conference of the National Children’s Monitoring Group “Respect Our Right” (ROR) was held, supported by the Organization “Syri i Vizionit” in partnership with “Save the Children office in Kosovo”, where the monitoring report was published. “The gap, the curriculum and its applicability”
This report drawn up by the children themselves, members of the ROR Group who belong to the field of monitoring the implementation of the fundamental right to education (schooling), highlights the results of the research. Thus offering a report with recommendations for the responsible institutions, namely the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) and the Municipal Directorates of Education (DKA), on the challenges of reforming the education system in the country.
The purpose of the report is to present the findings for the researched topics such as:
• Information about the implementation of educational curricula at school,
• realization or not of the custody hour,
• measuring the level of students’ load during the tests and the load of the teaching schedule.
According to the results of the questionnaires carried out with students, teachers and principals of lower secondary and upper secondary schools, from the ROR Children’s Group, the Commission for Monitoring School Textbooks and Curriculum regarding the implementation of the curriculum to which pre-university education is subject in Kosovo came out with some Recommendations and Conclusions:
• MEST together with the Municipal Directorates of Education and the teachers should work so that the students are more informed about the school curricula through which the learning process is developed and the knowledge acquired is evaluated;
• The school must create mechanisms that enable students, teachers, parents and other interested parties to declare for the part of the elective lesson, to see what are the needs and interests for the elective lesson, which will include all parties of interest;
• Schools should hold a debate with stakeholders (students, parents, teachers) or organize meetings, debates, or even research (interviews, questionnaires), promoting the school curriculum, elective subjects, and guardianship;
• MEST must correct the textbooks at least every 5 years so that the knowledge gained from the textbooks is updated (accurate) and coincides with recent discoveries and scientific research. In this way, they will not cause confusion among students when the learning process is connected to modern technology tools;
• Involvement of children (students) in the evaluation process of textbooks and teaching aids. This should be taken into account and legally defined in a systematic and comprehensive way. Which also means the fulfillment of an elementary right that has to do with children’s rights and participation in issues that concern children themselves;
• School principals together with teachers should coordinate the schedule of exams/tests in such a way that two or more tests are not held on the same day, since in addition to excessive workload, they also cause stress to students.
This conference is organized within the thematic program in the field of child protection and governance with children’s rights “Our Obligation to the Future – Protection of Children and Governance of Children’s Rights” which is implemented by the Eye of Vision organization, in partnership with Save the Children, office in Kosovo, supported by SIDA.
