Pejë, November 18 – The non-governmental organization Syri i Vizioni, in partnership with the organization “Save the Children”, held a roundtable in Pejë to analyze the situation of children in terms of legislation and the needs of Kosovo for the amendment or drafting of additional laws on the protection of children. and improving the situation of children in Kosovo.
Present at this table were representatives of the institutions in the municipality of Peja, whose mandate is to protect children, the directorate of education from the municipality of Klina, representatives of civil society and local media.
Those present at this table have requested that the penal code be changed for minors, as well as the penal code of Kosovo that would punish the parents of those children who commit violent acts against children.
Also, they have asked for the amendment of the law on social assistance, especially the existing criterion that the family must have a child under the age of five, in order to benefit from social assistance. This, according to those present, denies many families in a difficult economic situation the benefit of this assistance and this is affecting the increase in the number of children who are forced to do hard work or ask for alms.
In fact, they have been critical themselves, saying that each institution should be more responsible in its work and responsibly fulfill the obligations defined by law and other by-laws.
Even at this table, it was assessed that the schools are in great need of the presence of psychologists and pedagogues, which would affect the treatment of children with antisocial behavior, in reducing cases of violence and other phenomena that appear every day in schools.
At the end of the table, recommendations were issued that relate to the needs of supplementing and amending some laws, as well as the need to issue a special law for the protection of children’s rights.
Such tables will also be held in four other municipalities such as Gjakovë, Mitrovica, Ferizaj and Prishtina.
